The Department of Pharmacy recognizes the importance of advancing the profession of pharmacy by training clinical pharmacists. The Medical Center offers both an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency through the hospital and various specialty residency programs in conjunction with The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, with the practice site being the Medical Center. Both the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacy have distinguished themselves by advancing the practice of pharmacy in the institution and nationally.

Pharmacy Practice Residency
The pharmacy practice residency is a twelve month long program that provides the resident with a broad range of clinical experiences. Experiences that are required for an ASHP-accredited residency are inpatient acute care, drug information, and practice management. Residents are provided with a large variety of rotation options for meeting these requirements. The flexibility, versatility and adaptability of the program allow the resident to design a residency specific to their area of interest.

The clinical specialists that serve as preceptors are well known and respected in their specialty areas of practice. The Department of Pharmacy has clinical specialists in a variety of fields including nephrology/transplantation, internal medicine, cardiology, hematology/oncology, bone marrow transplant, critical care, nutritional support/surgery, psychiatry, neonatal intensive care, women's health, pain management/palliative care, anticoagulation management infectious disease, medication usage evaluation, investigational drugs, nuclear medicine, and drug information. These preceptors also serve as clinical faculty at the College of Pharmacy and devote time to teaching the residents.

The program requires completion of one major project that will be presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference. Through the pharmacy practice residency program, the Department of Pharmacy at The Ohio State

University Medical Center is devoted to producing the finest clinical pharmacists and advancing the pharmacy profession.

Specialty Residency
The specialty residency program is a twelve month long program designed to provide advanced training in a focused practice area. Specialty residencies are offered in the following areas:

Bone Marrow Transplant
Cardiology
Drug Information
Medication Use Evaluation
Critical Care
Hematology/Oncology
(inpatient)
Hematology/Oncology
(outpatient)

The specialty resident preceptors are specialty practitioners who devote their time to their respective specialty area. They also serve as Clinical Faculty at the College of Pharmacy and as preceptors for Pharm.D. student clerkship rotations. Residents in specialty programs devote all of their time to the specialty practice area and are expected to complete one or more individual projects during the residency under the direct supervision of their preceptor. The resident is expected to present one of these projects at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference.

The Ohio State University Medical Center is dedicated to excellence in residency training and education. The College of Pharmacy and Department of Pharmacy strive to develop the best clinical specialists and provide a residency program that is recognized nationally for the quality and excellence of its graduates.
