COLUMBUS CULTURE As Ohio's Capital, Columbus is a major government and service center. The city is large enough to offer all the advantages of urban living while providing an abundance of recreational and entertainment activities. Columbus is located in central Ohio, with more than a million people in the metropolitan area. It is very accessible, making it the marketing, distribution, and warehousing center for many companies. Cultural offerings in Columbus include the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Metropolitan, Opera Columbus, Columbus Museum of Art, Greater Columbus Arts Festival, Center of Science and Industry, the Columbus Zoo, and The Ohio State Fair. Columbus has multiple venues for concerts - the Germain Amphitheater hosts outdoor musical concerts; the Nationwide Arena and Schottenstein Center host indoor events year-round. The Columbus Clippers, the top baseball farm club for the New York Yankees, is located in Columbus along with the Columbus Crew, a professional soccer team, and the Columbus Blue Jackets, a professional hockey team. Horseracing, both harness and thoroughbred, may be enjoyed at Scioto Downs and Darby Downs, respectively. Columbus is also home of the Memorial Tournament, a PGA golf tournament at Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village Golf Club that attracts thousands of golf fans each spring, and the LPGA's New Albany Golf Classic held at the New Albany Country Club. Outdoor activities available in or near Columbus include boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking, skiing, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Columbus has more than 166 city recreation and parkland areas covering more than 5,430 acres. Many of Ohio's fine state parks are located within a short drive from the city. Columbus offers many diverse and unique neighborhoods from German Village and the Short North to Clintonville and Victorian Village. The Short North area offers several eclectic shops, art galleries and restaurants. The Short North is also home of the North Market; an open-air feeling market that offers fresh flowers, produce, and appetizing food. Each month, the Short North hosts a Gallery Hop where galleries open their doors for evening viewings and street musicians mingle with the crowds. Other annual neighborhood festivities include Oktoberfest in German Village, Irish Festival in Dublin, and the Jazz and Rib Fest downtown. The Ohio State University, home of the 2002 National Championship football team, boasts various men's and women's sporting events including football, basketball, baseball, hockey and golf. The University supports a wide variety of activities for students, faculty, and staff. The facilities at Larkins Hall feature 6 gymnasiums, 26 racquetball/handball courts, 3 conditioning rooms, a jogging track, and 4 pools. Other available campus recreational opportunities include 49 lighted tennis courts, a golf course, an ice rink, a French Field House indoor track and two state-of-the-art climbing walls. Many cultural events are offered by university organizations including the College of Arts, the Department of Theater, the School of Music, the Department of Dance, and the University's Wexner Center for Fine Art. Individuals may benefit from these organizations by being an active participant or by attending their many concerts, shows, and exhibits. |
