CLIFTON J. LATIOLAIS AWARD
In Recognition of: Clifton J. Latiolais In 1979 a survey was given to all pharmacy directors at medical school-affiliated hospitals in the United States. Clifton Latiolais was cited as the one pharmacist who was most influential in their professional lives. This is a clear testimony to Clif Latiolais' reputation trend-setting health professional whose teachings are respected and utilized on an international level. The late Clifton J Latiolais Sc D was professor emeritus, The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and director emeritus, The Ohio State University Hospitals Department of Pharmacy. During his legendary career Clif contributed in truly outstanding fashion to the practice of hospital pharmacy both in the United States and internationally. Dr. Latiolais began this career at The Ohio State University in 1958 and retired in 1983 after bringing international distinction to The Ohio State University Hospitals and the College of Pharmacy. During his tenure he mentored 129 outstanding leaders in hospital pharmacy and pharmacy education who continue to have an enormous impact on the institutional practice of pharmacy. Many of these and subsequent graduates hold prominent positions in the profession. In 1959 Clif Latiolais established a graduate and residency program at Ohio State which has produced directors of pharmacy at many of the top teaching hospitals in the nation. In 1985, some 25 years after he first began training graduate students and residents at The Ohio State University, these former students bestowed an honor on Latiolais by dedicating the Latiolais Award to recognize excellence for contributions made to hospital pharmacy. The Latiolais Award is presented annually at the Midyear Clinical Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and has been presented to only the nation's finest leaders in health system pharmacy practice With this level of high achievement it is reasonable to assume that many of the finest students are attracted to the program that Clif Latiolais started in 1959. In a manner of speaking Clif Latiolais was at the pinnacle of hospital pharmacy for 30 years. His preeminence in the area of bringing IV admixture technology to the forefront of hospital pharmacy practice led to dozens of national and international seminar engagements. Clif Latiolais always set the example for leadership. He demonstrated this commitment by serving as President of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the American Pharmaceutical Association and the American Managed Care Pharmacy Association. He is a former Harvey A K Whitney Award recipient and had been granted lifetime ASHP Honorary member status. His is a legacy of leadership for the profession that is unmatched. Latiolais Award Philosophy The Clifton J. Latiolais Award will be given to an individual of high personal and professional ideals, who has made significant contributions to institutional pharmacy practice. These contributions may include achievements or outstanding performance in institutional pharmacy practice, education, administration and/or research. The individual will have demonstrated throughout his/her career the philosophical perspectives, personal commitment and enthusiasm for excellence which Dr. Latiolais sought to develop in his residents. Eligibility All graduates of programs participating in the Residency in Hospital Pharmacy/Master of Science program at the Ohio State University or individuals intimately involved with the development of these programs are eligible for this award. Nominations Any member of the eligible pool of candidates may make nominations. Nominations should be submitted to the immediate past recipient who serves as chair of the Selection Committee. Consent will be obtained from all nominees. Selection Committee For the first five years of the award, an appointed committee made award selections. Each award winner will automatically be added to the Selection Committee. The chairman of the committee will be the most recent recipient of the award. At the end of the first five years, the appointed members were dropped from the committee and the committee is now composed entirely of former awardees. Responsibilities The Latiolais Award winner is expected to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in the year the award is bestowed. The awardee will be expected to receive the award at The Ohio State University Residency Luncheon held at that meeting and present a 15-20 minute address to that group on a topic of his/her choice pertaining to pharmacy practice. | Transcript of Dr. Latiolais's Acceptance Remarks from the Initial Award | |
